A Romance Found in Manhattan
The Bride:
Sandy Michele Hughes
Sandy was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. She grew up dancing at the Oregon Ballet Theatre and playing the piano. Though she continued to dance in high school, her main focus increasingly became the flute; she played in local youth orchestras and bands throughout. She went to the Hartt School of Music for undergrad and later the Manhattan School of Music for a Master's Degree specializing in orchestral playing. Sandy is now a member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and performs regularly with the NY Philharmonic.
The Groom:
Patrick Robert Burns
Patrick was born in Bloomington, Indiana but did most of his growing up in Atlanta, Georgia. As a junior in high school Patrick started a pre-college program called GAMES (Georgia Academy of Mathematics, Engineering, and Science). After graduating from GAMES, he became a "helluvan" engineer at Georgia Tech, where he studied Computer Science. During his college years, Patrick joined Phi Sigma Kappa. A number of his brothers from the fraternity as well as close friends from GAMES make up the groomsmen. Now, Patrick works for the iMessage team at Apple in Cupertino, CA.
Our Story
As with many couples today, Patrick and I met online. The likelihood of a computer scientist just happening to cross paths with an orchestral flutist would be mighty slim, but thanks to Okcupid, we managed to find one another in the crazy, wonderful chaos that is New York City.
In January 2013, we met for the first time at NYC's famous Magnolia Bakery. That evening of conversation made it clear that our online chemistry translated to real life, and both of us wanted to spend more time together. I brought a whole new world of music into Patrick's life, and Patrick brought a whole new world of science and technology into mine. And together we experienced the growth of a wonderful friendship into a love that felt like it just might last a lifetime.
Since then our love has only grown as we explored New York, lived in the East Village together, decided to move to California, shared an epic cross-country road trip, and have begun to build a new life in San Jose. As we start the rest of our lives as husband and wife, we're so excited to share this celebration of love and friendship with every single one of you in Oregon this August!
